Plastic bags packed with clothes, blankets and shoes made their way from the North-West University (NWU) Mahikeng Campus to the Unathi Community Orphans Home as the Zulu Cultural Society marked Mandela Day through a student-led donation drive.
The NWU Zulu Cultural Society hosted a clothing donation drive on 18 July 2025, commemorating Nelson Mandela Day, to promote community service and sustainable living. Students contributed over 12 plastic bags with clothing, two blankets and pairs of shoes, which were delivered to the Unathi Community Orphans Home.
“Our goal was not just to collect clothes, but to carry forward the spirit of giving that Mandela Day stands for,” said Ayanda Nkabinde, chairperson of the Zulu Cultural Society. “We wanted to show that even small actions can create a real impact.”
The home, which cares for over 105 orphaned and vulnerable children between the ages of 5 and 18, received the items with appreciation. Staff members expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting the importance of community partnerships in supporting the children’s needs.
“It brings me deep pride and humility to say that this initiative was more than just a donation, it was a gesture of humanity and a reminder that umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,” said Nomsa Sithole, co-founder of the society. “In remembering Tata Nelson Mandela's legacy, we were reminded that actions speak louder than words. Through this small act, we stitched a little more warmth into the lives of those children.”
The event also served as a call to action for students to adopt sustainable practices by donating gently used clothing rather than discarding it. Organisers highlighted that community outreach and environmental awareness can go hand in hand.
“Our students embraced the message and gave generously,” said society member Ayanda Zulu. “This was about showing up for our community and recognising the impact of unity.”
The Zulu Cultural Society plans to continue community outreach efforts throughout the year. Members believe that Mandela Day should inspire consistent action, not just symbolic gestures.
The donation drive is part of the NWU’s broader commitment to community engagement, aligning with the university’s values of service, inclusivity and civic responsibility.
