Young NWU academic features on SA’s Power of 40 list

At just 31, Dr Jabulile Makhalima – a lecturer in international trade at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark – is blazing a trail of excellence within her field of expertise. This, together with her tenacity for life, has earned her a well-deserved spot on the Destiny magazine’s high-status Power of 40 list for 2017.

Power of 40 list 2017

The Power of 40 list annually sees accomplished and ambitious women – all under the age of 40 – being nominated in various categories as role models and ambassadors of female empowerment. The women featured on the list are drawn from a myriad of industries and stages of success.

Jabulile was nominated on the basis of being one of the youngest women ever to obtain a doctorate in economics from the NWU.

Destiny magazine will, during a glitzy ceremony, award nominees a first, second or third-place ranking.

More about Jabulile

On being nominated for the list, Jabulile says that it is a tremendous honour and that she is both humbled and excited by the prospect. “Being a young woman from a small town like Vereeniging, such recognition is a huge honour and blessing,” says Jabulile.

Jabulile is a proud alumna of the NWU and completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the campus in Vanderbijlpark. She holds a BCom degree in economics and international trade, a BComHons degree in economics (with distinction) and, an MCom degree in economics - of which the coursework component was completed at the Molde University College in Norway. She obtained the degree Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 2016.

As an academic and a researcher, Jabulile’s field of expertise include development economics and poverty studies. She was appointed as a permanent lecturer in 2013.

Asked what advice she has for other young women, especially with regard to professional success, she says: “Put in the hours, and push yourself beyond your own boundaries of comfort. Nothing is impossible. And, above all, remember that you should not compare yourself to others since their journey differs from yours.”
