Work-readiness seminar bridges the gap between academia and the world of work

The North-West University (NWU), Career Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Language Practice, recently organised a work-readiness seminar on the Mahikeng Campus.

’The session served as a pivotal bridge between academia and the world of work, equipping students and alumni with practical skills and industry insights, to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities in the professional sphere.

Language and practice were central to the event's themes, with Itumeleng Bahetane from the SABC shedding light on language practice in the broadcasting field. Thapelo Lebona from the NWU’s Language Directorate emphasised the importance of language practice within the workspace.

In the segment dedicated to professional development and skills, Innocentia Mphuthi from the NWU’s People and Culture unit shared valuable insights into professional conduct in the workplace, while Refilwe Mphuti from Old Mutual delivered a presentation on financial management.

A representative from the Molopo Regional Court discussed the role of language practice in interpreting within a courtroom setting. Additionally, a representative from the North West Provincial Legislature delved into language practice in the parliamentary workspace.

The final segment of the event, "Language Practice and Terminology Development", featured Gaoretelelwe Phuti, editor-in-chief of SEFALA – the Setswana National Lexicography unit – who explored terminology and dictionary development. Finally, Bethuel Molemela spoke about the significance of sign language.
