Women should embrace their potential and not doubt themselves

After 17 years of well-earned experience at Lonmin Marikana Mining Operations and the South African Police Service, Boitumelo Mosikare (45) is no stranger to the security sector.

She has now been seconded to act for a two-month period as senior manager of Protection Services on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus.

Boitumelo is temporarily taking over the reins from Aubrey Welken who is currently on leave.

“I am excited about this opportunity to engage with various stakeholders such as campus management and the student campus committee,” she says.

“I’m eager to learn more and look forward to this new leadership role.”

Boitumelo is particularly honoured to be acting in the position as it coincides with Women’s month, annually commemorated in August.

In her view, many women tend to underestimate themselves and their potential, instead opting to compare themselves with others. Boitumelo believes women should be discouraged from doing this. “As empowered women we should believe in ourselves and our abilities,” she adds.

Joining the NWU on 1 December 2018, Boitumelo regards the safety and security of each individual at the university as a key priority.

She is married and has been blessed with two girls and a boy. Besides her day-to-day responsibilities at the university (with 60 employees reporting to her), she also recently embraced her “ancestral calling” – something she finds great joy in as it enables her to assist those in need.

Boitumelo Mosikare, current acting senior manager of Protection Services on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus, believes women should refrain from doubting their God-given abilities and talents.
