The North-West University (NWU) officially welcomed its first-year students to its three campuses on 10 February 2024.
The event was marked by a live-streamed address by the principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka. The address, delivered from the newly constructed Tsebonokeng hall at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, set the tone for the upcoming academic year.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including members of the NWU Council, senior management and student leadership.
In his address, Prof Tyobeka welcomed the first-year students to the NWU family. He acknowledged the sacrifices they had made and assured them that they were now part of one of the best universities in the world.
He highlighted the recent rankings that placed the NWU in the top 5% globally and among the top 10 in Africa across several academic domains, gave evidence of the significant role staff, students, alumni, and other role players in the success of the NWU.
The vice-chancellor encouraged the students to take up the baton and continue the relay, and to make a difference in the communities. “The NWU is not just a prominent global player, but also a force for change in the country through its teaching and learning, research, community engagement and vibrant student life.”
Prof Tyobeka stressed the importance of respect – the cornerstone of all NWU operations – and encouraged the students to embrace and uphold the values of the institution which is committed to fostering an environment of inclusion and respect. He condemned any form of discrimination, whether based on race, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity or any other grounds.
Prof Sibusiso Chalufu, executive director for student life, congratulated the students for choosing the NWU and encouraged them to be involved in university activities and to seize all opportunities presented to them. He also informed them about the student leadership academy launched by the NWU last year, and encouraged them to sign up and be part of it.
“You’ve made one of the best decisions in your life by choosing the NWU. Not only is the NWU renowned for its sports prowess and vibrant student life, but the university also provides academic and out-of-class support to ensure the development of its students.”
