Walking down memory lane: Exhibition of NWU Alumni Art

Art: A diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing the author's imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.

In appreciation of the role art plays in society, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Art Gallery on the campus in Potchefstroom is hosting two exhibitions in commemoration of graduate artists of the former University of Bophuthatswana (UNIBO).

“Decades in Waiting – The Art of our Alumni UNIBO” is being displayed at the NWU Botanical Garden Gallery, and Lesego Moncho’s “Decade of Expression and Creativity” at the Main Gallery.

Both exhibitions will be displayed on all three NWU campuses. They will remain in Potchefstroom until 20 March, whereafter they will be moved to the campus in Vanderbijlpark. Finally, the artworks will be permanently displayed on the campus in Mahikeng.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of Kristina Travis, the former head of the campus in Mahikeng’s Secretariat and Archives, these valuable artworks were handed over to the caring hands of the Gallery when the Fine Arts Department on the campus ceased to exist.

The exhibition “Decades in waiting” features artwork from alumni such as the likes of Daniel Mosako, Frank Moleleki Ledimo, Felicious Tonic Dichaba, L Sono and KM Rasimphi.

Lesego Moncho’s “Decade of Expression and Creativity” reflects memories of an innocent, young and curious mind down memory lane.

“Lesego’s works represent the break with traditional perspective and will portray to the Cubist use of simultaneous vision,” says Amohelang Mohajane, NWU curator.

“The figures in his work remain flat and accentuate the flatness of the painting surface. The figures and the background are integrated to lift the spirit and bring harmony into the work.”

“It is an honour for the NWU to display the marvellous artworks of our alumni,” says Nicolize Van der Walt, head of the alumni office.

Quinton Masemola and Itumeleng Mogotsi take in the incredible art during the opening of the NWU Gallery’s latest exhibitions.
