Voices of the River plant Seeds of Greatness

By Gofaone Motsamai

On a winter’s day in June 2025, the harmonies of the North-West University (NWU) Voices of the River choir filled a recording studio. Less than two months later, on 22 August, the choir released their debut extended play (EP) collection, Seeds of Greatness.

Beyond its artistic significance, Seeds of Greatness also carries a deeply personal mission: supporting the choir’s conductor, Relebogile Mafere. The accomplished musician and composer of the EP’s music lost his eyesight in 2021 and requires surgery estimated at R250 000. In a show of solidarity, the Voices of the River choir, based at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus, has committed a portion of the album’s royalties to help cover the costs.

“Mr Mafere has been the heart and soul of this choir,” says choir coordinator Bulelani Mxwera. “Despite losing his eyesight, he continues to guide us with passion and dedication. This project is not just about music; it’s about helping someone who has given so much to inspire others.”

Bulelani Mxwera says the idea to record an EP was conceived in 2024, but faced delays due to budget constraints, administrative hurdles and compliance requirements.

“This year, everything came together. The title Seeds of Greatness reflects our belief that one day we will leave Voices of the River, but we want to leave behind something meaningful, a legacy.”

The EP launch was spearheaded by the choir’s marketing and public relations officer, Reotshepe Molokoane, whose efforts ensured the project reached audiences both within and beyond NWU.

Stepping out of comfort zones

For the choristers, Seeds of Greatness is a reflection of their evolution as a group and the inclusive environment that has nurtured their talents.

“Over the years, Voices of the River has become a space that embraces hidden talent and nurtures growth,” Bulelani explains. “This EP showcases our members stepping out of their comfort zones, learning new techniques and pushing creative boundaries. It reflects our vision of unity, excellence and artistic expression.”

The 10-track EP carries a message of faith, hope and gratitude, with the choir hoping listeners will find encouragement through its music. “Life can be challenging, but we want to remind everyone to appreciate the little things and to hold onto faith,” adds Bulelani.
