The Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University (NWU) marked a historic milestone recently as student leaders hosted the first-ever Vanguard Gala Dinner – an elegant celebration of leadership, service and impact.
Held at the Tsebonokeng Hall, the evening brought together student leaders from across the campus in a night filled with pride, reflection and recognition.
What set this event apart was that it was entirely student-led – an initiative pioneered by Dean Dube, a passionate student leader at the helm of the organising team. As her leadership term came to a close, Dean envisioned the gala dinner as a space to honour the often unseen work of student leaders and celebrate the spirit of servant leadership on campus.
“This dinner was our way of saying thank you,” said Dean. “Student leaders work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, and this evening was about acknowledging that effort. It was the first of its kind at our campus, and I truly hope it becomes a lasting tradition.”
The evening programme was rich and dynamic, featuring a keynote address from Chris Williams, director for Student Life at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, who praised both the leaders being honoured and the students who brought the event to life.
“This event is a shining example of what student leadership looks like at its very best,” said Chris. “It was envisioned and executed by students – for students. I am incredibly proud of Dean and her team. This initiative reflects a culture of excellence, unity and vision that we want to continue nurturing on our campus.”
Guests were treated to an electrifying performance by the Motion Makers, a popular dance society based on campus, adding a vibrant artistic touch to the formal programme. The dinner was beautifully curated, with every detail reflecting the high standards and creativity of its organisers.
One of the most powerful moments of the evening was the screening of reflection videos, which captured highlights from the leadership year – from orientation to key milestones, campaigns and unforgettable student moments. The videos resonated deeply with the audience, offering a moving look back at a journey defined by growth, collaboration and perseverance.
The much-anticipated awards ceremony celebrated outstanding contributions across several categories, recognising both individual excellence and collective achievement. Cheers and applause echoed through the venue as names were announced and student leaders walked the stage, beaming with pride and joy.
The event was received with widespread enthusiasm, with many in attendance describing it as memorable, empowering and long overdue. It left a lasting impression on guests, setting a new standard for student-led initiatives on campus.
“The response was overwhelming,” added Dean. “So many students said they finally felt seen, appreciated and celebrated. That was the goal – and I believe we achieved it.”
She added that, with strong support from the student community and university leadership, there is every indication that the Vanguard Gala Dinner will become a proud annual tradition at the Vanderbijlpark Campus – a celebration not only of leadership, but of legacy, excellence and the power of student vision.
