The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus has ushered in a thrilling new chapter for its campus radio station, River FM.
Recently, the station underwent an impressive renovation, transforming it into one of the most advanced student-run media outlets in the region. With cutting-edge equipment now at its core, River FM is not just a radio station; it’s a launchpad for students to shine in the competitive world of broadcasting.
This refurbishment is more than just about the latest technology. It’s about building a space where students can dream big, grow their skills, and embrace the hands-on experience that will fuel their future careers. With industry-standard tools, from high-tech sound boards to the latest audio editing software, River FM offers a platform where students can immerse themselves in the professional world of media production.
Station manager Puso Kgosinkwe is passionate about the significance of this transformation. “This refurbishment isn’t just about the equipment; it's about empowering students to reach their full potential. We’re dedicated to providing them with the best resources, so they can develop the skills and creativity needed to succeed in a dynamic, ever-evolving media industry.”
The university is not just enhancing its facilities but is also investing in its students’ futures. Recent training sessions have equipped new hosts, producers, DJs, newsreaders and more with the technical and creative skills essential for success.
“We want every student to walk out of here not only understanding the technical aspects of media but also possessing a strong, innovative vision for their work. The media landscape is changing rapidly, and we want our students to be at the forefront of that change, ready to lead with fresh ideas,” says Puso.
Puso adds that, in addition to honing technical skills, River FM is a place where students can build valuable professional connections. “We are actively networking with industry experts and other stations to open doors for our students. The connections they make here will play a vital role in shaping their careers.”
River FM has always been a staple of the Vanderbijlpark Campus, offering entertainment, news, and an outlet for student creativity. Now, with its new state-of-the-art facilities, the station is poised to inspire the next generation of broadcasters.
Chris Williams, director for student life, believes this upgrade is a critical part of the university’s mission to enhance the student life experience and to prepare them for success. “This transformation is a crucial step toward ensuring that the NWU remains a leading institution in shaping students who are ready to face the challenges and opportunities of today’s world.”
