The Debating Society on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus made a good impression at the North West Open 2024, hosted and organised by the Potchefstroom Campus’ Debating Union.
The three-day tournament took place from 9 to 11 August and showcased the exceptional talents of NWU students.
Featuring a British Parliamentary Debate format with five preliminary rounds leading to the final rounds, 35 speaking teams and 37 adjudicators participated in the competition.
The Vanderbijlpark debate team included six speakers and two judges.
Team Caitlyn Clark led by Oratile Mokoena and Noluthando Mavimbela achieved a commendable eighth spot out of 35 teams and advanced to the semi-final stage, showcasing their debating skills.
Team Reneiloe Jane, consisting of Regopotswe Pitse and Okuhle Khanyile, delivered a solid performance and secured 19th place. Team Coco Gauff, comprising novice speakers Fakazi Mzozoyana and Rhivalelo Baloyi ranked 25th out of the 35 teams.
The adjudicating panel was represented by Katlego Maseko and Nontlantla Mthembu. Katlego's outstanding performance saw him reach the semi-final and finals, earning him the ninth best judge spot.
Brian Shokane from Student Counselling and Development says the team's participation demonstrated their courage and potential in the debating arena.
Director for student life Chris Williams adds that the Vanderbijlpark Debating Society's performance is a testament of their dedication to excellence and commitment to nurturing talent in the art of debating.
"The society's commitment to diversity and equal opportunity was evident in its team composition, which included an equal number of male and female members. This commitment aligns perfectly with the transformative ethos of the university," he says.
He adds that the society's achievements at this year’s Open marks a significant improvement from its performance in the previous year, demonstrating their growth and determination.
Looking ahead, the society aims to focus on further training opportunities for debaters and judges, and to continue participating in similar tournaments to further develop the skills of its members.
The Debating Society on the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus is going from strength to strength.
