Vanderbijlpark Campus celebrates dedication at Long Service Awards ceremony

On 13 February 2025, the Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University (NWU) hosted a heart-warming Long Service Awards ceremony at Tsebonokeng Hall, coinciding with the official academic opening of the university. The event was a fitting tribute to the unwavering commitment and dedication of employees who have played a vital role in shaping the university over the years.

Prof Sibusiso Chalufu, acting deputy vice-chancellor for Campus Operations (Vanderbijlpark Campus), expressed deep gratitude and admiration for the honourees, highlighting their years of dedicated service. “Today, we recognise the outstanding service of colleagues who have loyally and diligently served our university and campus for many years. We are talking about 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and – wait for it – 40 years of service! Veertig jaar – goeie genade, that is a long time!” he exclaimed, prompting a roar of laughter from the audience.

One of the most unforgettable moments of the day was celebrating Mr Jacob Nxadi for his incredible 40 years of service! The second his name was announced, the hall exploded with cheers and thunderous applause. Everyone jumped to their feet, giving him a well-deserved standing ovation. The outpouring of love and appreciation was a true reflection of the deep respect and admiration he has earned from his colleagues and the entire university community. Sharing his thoughts, Mr Nxadi passionately expressed, “Respect for one’s work is the most important foundation for success.”

Prof Chalufu also emphasised the need to further recognise employees in various capacities. “While it is great and indeed necessary to recognise such long service, I sincerely think that we must find a way of acknowledging and appreciating colleagues in between. Yes, we have the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards, and we have bonuses at the end of the year, but I believe that we need to do a little bit more.”

The ceremony was not only a celebration of longevity in service but also a reflection of the values that underpin the NWU – dedication, perseverance and excellence. As the institution embarks on the 2025 academic year, the words of Prof Chalufu served as a reminder of the resilience and hard work that fuel the university’s success.

“May we give it our best in 2025 and take the NWU, particularly the Vanderbijlpark Campus, to even greater heights. In the words of the NWU Anthem, may God truly lead us with His hand and guide us with grace. I wish all of us a marvellous, successful, and blessed 2025 – may it be a great year for everyone,” he concluded.

Congratulations to all the award recipients! Your commitment is an inspiration to all, and your contributions continue to shape the future of the NWU.
