The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently bid farewell to director for student life Dr Sean McCallaghan after being with the institution for 15 years as a student and staff member.
Dr McCallaghan, who is leaving for New Zealand, was commended for his exceptional leadership, mentorship and student support at an event attended by his wife, two children, staff and students.
He said it is not easy for him to say goodbye.
"I began my journey with the university in 2001 as a student and became an employee in July 2008. The university has profoundly impacted my life, providing me with a sense of community, numerous opportunities and valuable qualifications. The most fulfilling for me was watching students I mentored achieve success, some of whom have now become my colleagues. While saying goodbye is difficult, I am grateful for all that the university has given me."
Dr McCallaghan holds a PhD in business administration and management from the NWU. After passionately serving as director for student life in an interim capacity, he officially assumed this role on 1 March 2023. Prior to this, he worked as a sports manager and house parent at Faranani for several years.
He expressed his gratitude towards the late and former director for student life, Jacob Simango, who passed away in June last year. He also thanked Dr Sibusiso Chalufu, executive director for student life, for his guidance and support, and Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, for the opportunities she gave him.
In turn, Prof Du Plessis expressed her gratitude for his valuable contributions, acknowledging his critical role in maintaining campus stability and supporting student centricity by collaborating with all student structures.
"You have been a pillar of support for everyone and your endurance and dedication are greatly appreciated. Although we will miss you, we wish you well on your new adventure in New Zealand," she added.
