The Arts unit at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently hosted a 2024 Vaal July event, themed “Celebrating 20 Years of Greatness: Student Life Edition”.

This event aimed to honour two decades of excellence by bringing innovation and a commitment to sustainability to life through fashion and performances. Students were tasked to showcase their creativity by creating garments made from recyclable materials.

Participants from various student societies, academic chapters and residences came together to display their diverse talents, emphasising the importance of environmental consciousness and the vibrant artistic spirit within the student community.

“The Vaal July is more than just a fashion show, it represents a new culture on campus, allowing students to express themselves and tell their stories through their designs,” says organiser and Student Life cultural officer Lethiwe Kubheka.

During the final round of the fashion show, the top three male and top three female groups were announced. In the male category category Ebukhosini residence came first, with the Bohlale and Faranani residences in second and third place. In the female category the Gazanation society walked away with the spoils, with the Zion Christian Church in second place and Faculty of Theology in third position.
