The Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark campuses of the North-West University (NWU) held their 2024 final-years’ functions on Wednesday, 10 October, creating a festive feeling among the students.
At the events, around 1 300 students from the Potchefstroom Campus and 700 students from the Vanderbijlpark Campus gathered to take pictures and videos, reflecting on their experiences at the university. With loads of fun and good company in order, the events also served as platforms for students to bid farewell to their peers.
Thought-provoking speeches from various speakers encouraged the students to pursue their dreams, preserve the NWU’s core values and make a meaningful contribution to society.
Prof Daryl Balia, deputy vice-chancellor for Information Technology and Campus Operations (Potchefstroom Campus), welcomed the students as young alumni, urging them to participate in the alumni activities of the NWU.
On the Vanderbijlpark Campus, Mr Clement Manoko, NWU executive director for Corporate Relations and Marketing, welcomed the students at the picnic area of the Big Lapa.
The performances of the Wag-’n-Bietjie 2024 SÊR group and the NWU Puk Choir sparked a celebratory mood among the students on the Potchefstroom Campus as they enthusiastically danced and excitedly joined in the songs. On the Vanderbijlpark Campus the NWU Voices of the River choir also provided entertainment for the students.
Dr Onnicah Motloung, lecturer at the University of Johannesburg, who served as a research assistant and part-time instructor at the NWU from 2018 to 2022, offered words of encouragement to the Vanderbijlpark Campus students.
