Three NWU alumni appointed to serve on Women in Nuclear South Africa board 

Malebo Makgale, Lerato Makgae, and Ntsoaki Tlape, all three North-West University (NWU) alumni, have recently been appointed to serve on the board of Women in Nuclear South Africa (WiNSA).

President of WiNSA and also an NWU alumnus, Tebogo Motlhabane, says each board member was nominated by her respective organisation.

“These women are seasoned professionals in the nuclear industry. We do not doubt that they will contribute to the growth of WiNSA and ensure that it becomes an impactful women’s organisation.”

Malebo Makgale is currently employed by the National Nuclear Regulator as the Manager Assessments: Natural Occurring Radioactive Materials. She holds an MSc degree in applied radiation science and technology from the NWU.

Lerato Makgae

Lerato Makgae is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) national liaison officer at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Lerato has been in the nuclear sector for more than 15 years, and also holds a MSc degree in applied radiation science and technology from the NWU.

Ntsoaki Tlape

Ntsoaki Tlape also holds a MSc degree in applied radiation science and technology from the NWU, and is the chief nuclear physicist at Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear power station.

WiNSA, a non-profit organisation for women in the nuclear industry, was launched in 2003 to promote the meaningful participation of women in the fields of nuclear technology, safety and non-proliferation.

The organisation has more than 1 000 registered members from different organisations within the nuclear industry. These include the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, Eskom, the National Nuclear Regulator, the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute, iThemba Labs, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and private organisations such as Mzansi Energy Solutions.
