Tech teachers hit the ground running at the NWU

Representatives from more than 40 technical schools in the Free State recently gathered at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark for a three-day workshop on marketing and communication within the secondary school environment.

“These days, schools are run like businesses,” says Mr Wimpie Lodewyk, deputy chief education specialist circuit manager of technical and agricultural schools from the Free State Department of Education. “The technical school is competing for popularity in a time where we have a significant shortage of technical skills in our country. That is why proper marketing and communication skills are of pivotal importance in the strategic management of a technical school.”

Course content

Since the NWU is one of only three universities across the country that offer the BEd Tech programme that produces technical educators, the university is the right port of call. Experts and role-players from the NWU’s Marketing and Student Recruitment Department discussed relevant topics such as communicating the values of a school, branding, open days and recruitment.

The workshop also included a visit to the campus’ technical workshops.

Mr Piet Kruger, a lecturer in Technical Teaching at the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, addresses some of the visitors about teaching aids in the classroom.
