Academic takes public health leadership role on global stage

Taking along the spirit of Ubuntu, a North-West University (NWU) academic is stepping onto the international stage to connect South African public health research with global networks through her appointment to a key leadership role at a major international conference.

Dr Mpho Chipu from the School of Nursing has been appointed by the International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) as country coordinator for the 12th International Public Health Conference set to take place in Bali, Indonesia, from 5 to 7 August 2026.

Students to represent South Africa at global soil-science competition

A team of North-West University (NWU) students will represent South Africa at the 5th International Soil Judging Competition, scheduled for June 2026 in Nanjing, China. This will place the institution on a global platform for soil science training and research.

The team, led by NWU lecturer and research scientist Angelique Daniell from the School of Geo- and Spatial Sciences, includes Wehan Voges, Heike Steinberg, Botha du Plessis and Sebastian Burger, who will compete against teams from 23 countries.

NWU hosts IORA event as call for multilateral cooperation grows

The North-West University (NWU) positioned higher education as a driver of global cooperation as leaders from government, academia and the diplomatic community gathered to mark the 29th International Day of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) at its Mahikeng Campus on 27 March 2026.

The event, held in partnership with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), brought together stakeholders from across the Indian Ocean region, including diplomats and ambassadors from member states and dialogue partners.

Nursing student wins WorldSkills South Africa competition

North-West University (NWU) nursing student Mecayla Johnson will represent South Africa at the 46th International WorldSkills Competition after winning the WorldSkills South Africa Occupational Standards national competition.

Mecayla represented the NWU at the national competition from 8 to 12 March 2026 in KwaZulu-Natal where she competed against seven participants from across the country. They were tested on their knowledge and grasp of their respective talents in simulated hospital and clinic scenarios.

Creativity meets technology at the Arcademia Global Game Jam

From 27 February to 1 March, the 2026 Arcademia international game jam brought together students and academics from several universities for a 48-hour sprint of creativity, collaboration, and technical innovation. Participating institutions were connected through a shared livestream and online collaboration platforms, transforming local venues into nodes of an international game development network.

Law students head to India for elite global criminal law moot competition

From 13-15 February 2026 three North-West University (NWU) law students will argue some of the world’s toughest criminal law questions in a premier mooting event in New Delhi in India.

Potchefstroom Campus students Lindiwe Ngophe, Ethan van Wyk and Connor Anderson will represent the NWU at the University of Delhi’s 22nd KK Luthra Memorial Moot Court Competition, a globally respected forum that attracts top universities.

Prof. Ankit Katrodia’s academic visits advance scholarly research and collaboration

Prof. Ankit Katrodia, an associate professor at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) WorkWell Research Unit in the School of Management Sciences, recently concluded an extensive international academic tour spanning Vietnam, India, Dubai (UAE), Nepal and other global academic hubs.
