South Africa’s beloved Madiba was a member of the law fraternity, so it was fitting that in honour of Mandela Day, law students and lecturers from North-West University (NWU) engaged with Grade 12 learners on the role of law in society.

On 28 July 2025, the Faculty of Law at the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus offered learners from Living Faith Independent Combined School insights on the impact of law of people’s lives and what to expect when transitioning from high school to university.

With the 2025 Varsity Football tournament set to kick off on 7 August, the men’s team from North-West University (NWU) say they are mentally and physically prepared for another competitive campaign.

Head coach of the NWU Soccer Institute, Nkululeko Malgas, says the team is entering the season with a solid foundation and the benefit of experience. “They are in the right mental space, having retained almost 70% of the players from the 2024 season. They know exactly what is at stake,” he says.

A classroom once filled with nervous first years became a space of confidence and direction as the North-West University’s (NWU) School of Languages on the Mahikeng Campus welcomed its 2025 final-year students to an information session on 24 July on furthering their studies and following a path towards lifelong learning.

A partnership with the common goal of producing researchers ready to respond to the needs of society has unlocked full bursaries for nine postgraduate chemistry students from the North-West University (NWU). This is one of the results of the ongoing partnership between the university and the Sasol Foundation.

The scholarships, awarded under the National Research Foundation-Sasol Foundation Scholarship Programme, are for the 2025 academic year and were confirmed during a visit to the Mahikeng Campus.

In yet another impressive show of strength, the bodybuilding team from the North-West University (NWU) has won the Bodybuilding Championships of University Sports South Africa (USSA) for the second consecutive year.

The 280-strong team successfully defended their title against athletes from nine other universities participating in the competition, held on 28 June 2025 at Durban University of Technology in Pietermaritzburg.
