PhD student shares her TechWomen experience

Ntokozo Happy Msiza, a PhD student in animal sciences at the North-West University (NWU), recently returned from the TechWomen programme in the United States, where she represented South Africa among women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

TechWomen, an initiative by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, empowers women from Africa, the Middle East and Central and South Asia to advance their careers, pursue their dreams and inspire others in their communities.

Animal health students present entrepreneurial solutions for agriculture

Instead of focusing on formal employment when they graduate, final-year animal health science students at the North-West University (NWU) are tapping into their entrepreneurial spirit to explore ways to generate an income.

As part of a specialised entrepreneurship module, students from the School of Agricultural Sciences showcased their innovative business proposals at a pitching session on 15 November.

InnovateHER 2024 – final pitching event

In a display of entrepreneurship, innovation and community impact, the North-West University (NWU) Business School magnificently hosted the final pitching event for its InnovateHER community project on Saturday, 9 November in a quest to empower young women.

Five sets of finalists took centre stage at SuperSport Park in Centurion to battle it out to be announced winner of this year’s pitching competition. InnovateHER is an online programme that trains young women between the ages of 15 and 25 to identify and solve problems.

NWU student joined global experts at Korean Conference on Education

Kamogelo Noge, a Master of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (MIKS) student at the North-West University (NWU) Mahikeng Campus, recently embarked on an educational journey to the industrial city of Incheon in South Korea.

Noge was honoured to partake in the Korean Conference on Education, which ran from Monday, 28 October to Friday, 1 November at the Songdo Convensia – an international exhibition and convention centre.

NWU Students triumph in SATNAC Industry Solutions Challenge 2024

In an outstanding achievement, two students from the North-West University (NWU) claimed victory for the second consecutive year in a national telecommunications industry competition.

Karabo Makau, a third-year BCom information systems student, and Ferdi Steyn, a BSc honours student in computer science, won first place in the 2024 Industry Solutions Challenge of the South African Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC).

Olympic stars claim top sport awards

The North-West University’s (NWU) two Olympic superstars, Bradley Nkoana and Jo-Ané van Dyk, were back on the podium when they were presented with top sporting awards at NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus.

These two remarkable athletes are both the pride of the nation and the NWU after both bagged silver at the Olympic Games in Paris, France earlier this year. Jo-Ané won silver in the javelin at the Olympics, gold at the All-African Games in Ghana, gold at the African Championships in Cameroon and set a personal best of 64,22 m in the Olympic qualifying rounds.

Academic offers matrics valuable advice for 2024 exams

With matric finals just days away, North-West University (NWU) academic in the Faculty of Education Dr Judicial Sebatana says they must focus on the present and not on past shortcomings.

Sharing his insights on the readiness of matric learners for their final exams which start on 21 October 2024, Dr Sebatana points out that the final exams account for 75% of their mark, whereas past performance only counts for 25%. “It’s important for learners to remember that it’s not too late.”

Youth Learning Festival empowers young people

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) unwavering commitment to community engagement is deeply rooted in its initiatives of empowering the communities it serves using research to address relevant needs.

The NWU’s Sustainability and Community Impact division recently held its annual Youth Learning Festival (YLF) – welcoming about 150 young people from the Stilfontein and Fochville areas to the Potchefstroom Campus.
