The collective power of women who lead from within

National Women’s Day commemorates the 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956, giving us the powerful words: “Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” – “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.” But I sometimes wonder whether we remember only the determination of those women, or whether we acknowledge the more uncomfortable part of our history: they were not asking to be recognised. They were demanding that a system change.

Robotics and astronomy ignite curiosity ahead of NWU Vice-Chancellor's Science Day

Science came alive long after the classroom bell had rung as educators, learners and community members gathered at Hoërskool Wolmaransstad for a Pre-Vice-Chancellor's Science Day programme that combined robotics, astronomy and hands-on learning. 

The activities formed part of the build-up to the North-West University's (NWU's) 2026 Vice-Chancellor's Science Day, which is held under the theme "Science, technology and innovation are for everyone".

NWU Soccer Institute sweeps top honours at North West Sports Awards

The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute capped a landmark season by claiming three of the province's top honours at the 10th North West Sports Awards. 

The institute was named Team of the Year, head coach Nkululeko Malgas received the Coach of the Year award, and captain Aphelele Sibisi was crowned Sport Star of the Year.

NWU captain Aphelele Sibisi crowned North West Sport Star of the Year

The historic rise of the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute into professional football has earned another milestone after captain Aphelele Sibisi was named the 2026 North West Sport Star of the Year at the 10th North West Sports Awards held at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday, 1 August 2026.

The award, determined through a public vote, was in recognition of his performances and leadership during the first half of the season.
