NWU and Lincoln University strengthen ties in sport and agriculture

The North-West University (NWU) and Lincoln University in New Zealand have expanded their growing academic ties after concluding a series of engagements on sport, recreation, agriculture and applied research.

The visit took place on 26 November, follows an earlier trip by Lincoln academics to the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus, where initial exchanges were held on high-performance sport, concussion studies and postgraduate training.

Medical and space science research takes centre stage during NWU’s visit to Otago University

Strengthening ties in two fast-growing scientific fields, medicine and space science, was the central focus of high-level engagements at Otago University in New Zealand where the North-West University (NWU) explored opportunities to advance its internationalisation drive.

The visit on 28 November brought together academics working in medical training, health research and astrophysics to map out areas where their institutions can work together in coming years.

PhD Hub for Africa – proposal presentations mark major milestone in pilot phase

Today marks the opening of proposal presentations for the inaugural cohort of the PhD Hub for Africa, an ambitious pilot initiative of the North-West University (NWU) Business School to reimagine doctoral education for the continent.

Over two days, Friday, 28 November and Monday, 1 December 2025, 24 doctoral candidates will present their research proposals as the culmination of a four-month Bridging Phase. Those who meet the academic requirements will proceed to full enrolment in the PhD in Business Administration programme in 2026.

Where tomorrow’s medicines begin and Africa’s health future is forged

South Africa’s pharmaceutical landscape is marked by ambition, urgency and stark inequities. The continent carries 25 percent of the global disease burden but produces only a fraction of the medicines it consumes. Bridging this gap requires more than scientific talent; it demands infrastructure, accreditation and an ecosystem that can move a molecule from idea to impact. At the North-West University (NWU), the Preclinical Drug Development Platform (PCDDP) is positioning itself as precisely that bridge.

NWU celebrates 5 Telkom Radio Awards nominations

Every weekday, the airwaves across the North-West University (NWU’s) campuses tell a story. Stories of student voices rising, the laughter shared between lectures, the pride in sports, heart-to-heart conversations, and the music of campus life.

PUKfm (93.6) and NWU FM (105.5) have both been nominated in five categories of the 2025 Telkom Radio Awards, demonstrating that NWU’s talent should not be underestimated. For campus radio stations, being recognised alongside top commercial and community stations is a powerful affirmation of the growing influence of youth-led media.

NWU explores strategic collaboration with top-ranked Australian university

A North-West University (NWU) delegation visited the University of Melbourne, Australia’s highest-ranked institution, on 20 November to benchmark international best practices and explore avenues for future collaboration.

The visit comes as the NWU accelerates plans to establish the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, scheduled to welcome its first cohort in 2028, and advances discussions to launch a School of Mining and Mining Engineering.

Monetary policy needs to be supportive of the incipient economic upturn

The unanimous decision by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to cut interest rates by another 25 basis points (bps) was the right one.

Prof. Raymond Parsons, economist at the North-West University (NWU) Business School, says the MPC decision of 20 November is the result of a number of recent favourable financial developments. It created the space to further ease borrowing costs for business and consumers, which he says is encouraging.

The North-West University (NWU) honoured its exceptional staff at the annual NWU Excellence Awards ceremony, held in Potchefstroom on 20 November.

More than 150 staff members received recognition for their outstanding contributions to the university’s key focus areas of teaching and learning, community engagement, and research and innovation.

New centre prioritises security thinking, strategic stability
