NWU adds another top placement to its impressive performance in rankings

The North-West University (NWU) has added another top placement to its impressive show in international rankings. The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy ranks the NWU in the category for the top 5 to 7 South African universities in its 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The placing in the 5 to 7 category is an improvement from being ranked seventh in the country last year.

ARWU places the NWU in the 501 to 600 ranking category internationally – a considerable achievement, as it was ranked in the 601 to 700 category in 2022.

GIFT goes international

A research team from the Global, Innovative, Forefront, Talent (GIFT) Management research niche area in the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (FEMS) recently traveled to Hungary to collaborate with the University of Miskolc.

The trip was financed by the European Union’s Erasmus funding programme which provides for lecturers and students from two countries to visit host universities in a mutually beneficial exchange programme.

Prof Monyeki to represent the Department of Health

The North-West University (NWU) Faculty of Health Sciences commends Prof Andries Monyeki, who has been asked to represent the National Department of Health at an upcoming multi-country World Health Organization (WHO) workshop. This nomination both reflects his expertise and recognises his research contributions to public health policy.

Prof Monyeki has expressed his gratitude, saying that he is "greatly honoured and humbled by this nomination".

NWU’s Prof Bismark Tyobeka: We need to invest in nuclear expertise, or lose it

The global energy dependency clock is ticking, and in South Africa it is doing so at a dizzying pace. What started as an impending energy crisis more than a decade ago has morphed into a situation that can only be described as akin to an irrevocable catastrophe. SADiLaR director honoured at international conference

The executive director of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) at the North-West University (NWU), Prof Langa Khumalo, was recently honoured for his contribution to multilingualism at the 1st International Conference on Language, Multilingualism, and Decolonisation Practices in Higher Education.

Organised by the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Academy for Multilingualism, the conference brought together scholars from 18 universities in South Africa, as well as from Namibia, the Netherlands and the United States.

Prof Bismark: On to a sustainable energy future

The Student RAG Community Service (SRCS) is a community engagement initiative of the North-West University (NWU) based on the Potchefstroom Campus and is the largest student-driven community engagement initiative in the southern hemisphere. NWU welcomes sign language to South Africa’s official language family

It was a long time coming, but on Wednesday, 19 July, Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African president, officially recognised South African Sign Language as South Africa’s 12th official language.

This makes South Africa only the fourth country in Africa to recognise sign language as an official language and, according to Dr Keaobaka Seshoka, director of the Language Directorate at the North-West University (NWU), it is a belated but very welcome addition to the country’s official language family.

Prof Bismark looks at SA’s nuclear future

You don’t have to be able to split the atom to know that South Africa – and the world – is facing an energy crisis and that urgent answers are needed to address this pressing problem.

That is why the principal and vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), Prof Bismark Tyobeka, will be part of a panel discussion titled Global Nuclear Power – Implications for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.
