Stunning late free kick secures the first three points for the Purple Army

The NWU Football Club (NWU FC) secured a historic first victory in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with a hard-fought win over Leicesterford City FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, earning their first three points since gaining their promotion to the second-tier football competition of South Africa.

The decisive moment came in the 80th minute when Kabelo Moagi stepped up to take a free kick and unleashed a thunderous strike that beat the goalkeeper, sending the Purple Army into celebration and securing a memorable victory for the club.

The result marks an important milestone for the NWU FC as the team continues to adapt to the demands of the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Despite the victory, the club remains 13th on the league log with seven points and will be looking to build on this result to climb the standings in the coming fixtures.

Head coach Nkululeko Malgas welcomed the victory, describing it as an important breakthrough for the team after a challenging start to the campaign. “We are very excited to get our first win in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The players have continued to work hard, remain committed and believe in what we are building. This victory gives us confidence and motivation, but we know there is still a lot of work ahead. Our focus now is to build on this performance, keep improving and work towards securing more wins,” said coach Nkululeko.

The coach’s message reflects the determination of the team to use this result as a foundation for greater consistency as the season progresses. For the NWU FC and its supporters, the victory represents more than three points: It is a confidence boost for a club embracing the challenge of competing at a higher level and striving to establish itself in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The Purple Army will now look to carry this momentum into their next fixture as they continue their campaign with determination and pride.
