In a celebration of traditional African food, dance, music and poetry, students at the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) came together for the fifth annual Cultural Day of the Student Life Department.
Held on 4 October at Sedibeng Park in Mahikeng, the event was a celebration of African unity, multiculturalism and student collaboration.
Students from various residences and faculties participated in a competition to showcase their cultural heritage through traditional food, music, dance and poetry.
Charmaine Molosioa, manager for student life, emphasised the NWU's commitment to diversity, noting the presence of students from countries such as Nigeria, Botswana and Lesotho.
The competition judges included Charmaine, Mpho Lenoke from the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and Dr GC Nsondensai, an international academic from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Performances included Zulu Ukugida and Setswana Setapa dances, which left the audience in awe. Sol Plaatjie Residence took first place for the second year in a row, followed by the Kgosi Dick Montshioa and Mbada residences in second place, and Ngaka Modiri and postgraduate residences in third place.
Looking forward to the next annual Cultural Day, Charmaine announced plans to introduce new activities such as painting and drama to highlight more student talents, ensuring continued cultural celebration and creativity at the NWU.
