Coert Visser, an honours student in human resource management at the North-West University (NWU), recently won third place at the Marius Meyer South African Board for People Practises (SABPP) Excellence Awards.
This award programme underscores the importance of human resource management within organisations, and also celebrates and acknowledges the outstanding achievements of students in the field.
Finalist students from universities across the country had to create a concise presentation on the topic "Agile resilience for the future of the human resource management profession" with a strict time limit of seven minutes.
Coert says the ability to blend professionalism with a profound understanding of the subject matter played a pivotal role in achieving this recognition.
"Linking the topic to reputable sources such as the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report, the SABPP HRM Standards, the Future of Jobs Report 2020, and the United Nations 2063 and African Union Sustainability Development Goals, provided the necessary depth and credibility for me to secure the third place.”
He says for him the key challenge lied in seamlessly connecting diverse sources and perspectives to present a coherent narrative.
“Overcoming these obstacles necessitated a methodical approach of critically evaluating information. It involved examining how human resource management could contribute to achieving various sustainability goals, and strategically leveraging the insights from the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report to benefit both human resource management professionals and their respective organisations,” explains Coert.
He shares this advice: to students aspiring to achieve similar recognition in the future. “You must have a genuine passion for human resource management and industrial psychology. Dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to the field and be proactive in seeking ways to contribute and innovate. It is also important to collaborate with professionals, mentors and peers to gain insights and support for your journey.”
Coert holds a BCom degree in human resource management from the NWU. When not immersed in academics, he finds solace in nature and admires the picturesque
landscape of the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus. He also enjoys expressing his creativity by playing the piano, a pastime he has cherished for years.
