On an ordinary morning at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, Lesego Molema follows his usual routine, attending lectures, meeting with student groups and checking on campus projects. For him, these are not separate roles but connected responsibilities that link his studies, leadership and community work. This year, his efforts have led to national recognition.
Lesego, a second-year BSc animal science student and fundraising and RAG officer of the Student Campus Council (SCC), has been nominated for the South African Agricultural Awards, which will take place in Durban on 7 November 2025.
This nomination marks a milestone for the NWU: Lesego is the first student from the university to be recognised at these national awards, which celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership in farming, agri-business and culinary arts.
“Being nominated is a great honour, especially as the first student from my department and institution to receive this recognition. It validates my work and confirms that my contribution to agricultural development is being noticed,” Lesego says.
Lesego, who also holds a diploma in animal science, is committed to leadership, student empowerment and agricultural development.
Last year, he founded and chaired the Animal Science Student Chapter, an initiative that has since grown into a platform for student engagement, skills development and collaboration with the subject group Animal Science. The chapter has been instrumental in fostering partnerships, community service and mentorship among students, earning it the Best Social Responsibility and Awareness Award from the NWU’s Student Life department.
“Our chapter aims to enhance the student experience by collaborating with the subject group Animal Science, helping students access bursaries and scholarships, participating in community projects, and creating opportunities for job shadowing and mentorship,” Lesego explains.
Putting the NWU on the map
As the SCC fundraising and RAG officer, Lesego is also instrumental in mobilising resources and initiatives for the benefit of students on the Mahikeng Campus.
“I am passionate about contributing to the student community through fundraising initiatives that make a real difference in students’ lives,” he says. “This recognition puts the NWU on the map and highlights our institution’s commitment to excellence and innovation. I am proud to be part of a university that believes in its students’ potential.”
Lesego sees his nomination for a South African Agricultural Award as a platform to expand his advocacy for youth involvement in agriculture and to inspire other students to pursue leadership and innovation within the field.
“This recognition will enhance my impact in agricultural advancement and student leadership. I will leverage it to create a bigger impact in the NWU community and beyond, while upholding the values of our university,” he concludes.
