Student excels in Morganti Ju-Jitsu World Championships

Elvis Moyo, a PhD candidate in the Centre for Applied Radiation and Technology (CARST) at the North-West University (NWU), represented the institution and South Africa at the Morganti Ju-Jitsu World Championships from 14 to 15 October in Recife, Brazil.

Elvis's dedication and determination bore fruit as he secured a bronze medal in the stand-up fighting category. In addition, he came close to clinching another medal in the grappling category, finishing in fourth place.

"Even though the competition was fierce, I am extremely proud of my performance and grateful for the experience gained during the competition," he says.

He adds that he learned valuable lessons at the championships, and that he is even more committed to refining his skills for future competitions. “I am grateful to the NWU, my teammates, and all those who have been part of my Ju-Jitsu journey,” adds Elvis.

Prof Helen Drummond, acting director of CARST, congratulated Elvis. "We smile as we see your strides and are extremely proud of the accolades that you brought back home. We will continue to support and watch you as you brave even greater challenges, both academically and on the mat."
