Student and Miss World South Africa semi-finalist championing youth empowerment

At just 22 years old, Neo Nkhumane is making waves both academically and in the world of pageantry. A master's degree student in communication at the North-West University (NWU) and a semi-finalist for the Miss World South Africa pageant, she proves that beauty and brains can go hand in hand.

Hailing from the small town of Carletonville, she has always been passionate about making a difference in her community. Her initiative, “Beyond Borders,” is a testament to her commitment to social change. The project focuses on three pillars: Education and Awareness, Empowerment, and Partnerships and Collaborations.

The first pillar, Education and Awareness, aims to provide comprehensive sexual education and raise awareness about teenage pregnancy. By educating young people about the consequences and preventive measures, she hopes to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancies and equip teenagers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.

The second pillar, Empowerment, seeks to inspire young girls to follow their passions and dreams. She aims to equip them with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in various fields through skills empowerment, mentorship, and leadership programmes. “Empowering young girls is not just about providing them with opportunities, but also about helping them believe in their potential,” she says.

The third pillar, Partnerships and Collaborations, focuses on building a reliable and supportive network with donors, schools, and non-profit organisations (NPOs). By fostering these relationships, she aims to create a robust support system that can sustain and expand the reach of her project. “Collaboration is key to making a lasting impact,” she explains. “We can achieve so much more when we work together.”

Neo says being a semi-finalist in the Miss World South Africa pageant is an incredible honour. “It’s an opportunity to amplify my voice and the voices of those I aim to help through Beyond Borders.”

Her dedication to her studies and her commitment to social causes exemplify the values of perseverance and service. As she continues to work towards her master's degree, she remains focused on her goal of positively impacting society. Through Beyond Borders, she is not only changing lives but also setting a powerful example for young women everywhere.

As the Miss World South Africa pageant approaches, she prepares to take the stage with poise and purpose, embodying the true spirit of a modern-day changemaker.
