Strategic planning workshop empowers student leadership at NWU

From 08 to 10 November 2024, the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of North-West University (NWU) participated in an annual strategic planning and training workshop. Organised by the office of the executive director: student life, the workshop aimed to equip SRC members with the knowledge, skills, and strategic direction needed for their leadership roles in the upcoming term.

Over three days, participants engaged with key topics aligned with the University's strategy and mission, focusing on how the SRC can contribute to these goals.

Sessions included an overview of the University's culture climate survey—a vital tool for understanding student experiences and needs—a detailed presentation on the annual performance plan for student life, and an exploration of the objectives and goals of student life at NWU.

Under the guidance of Prof. Sibusiso Chalufu, executive director: student life, the SRC members examined the NWU strategic plan ("Taking the NWU Forward: 2024 and Beyond"). They began developing their broad-based performance plan and framework. This framework will guide their leadership initiatives and responsibilities throughout the 2024/2025 term.
The workshop also received valuable input from key figures in the office of the executive director: student life. They included LeRoux Malan, the office and project manager, and the three student life campus directors, Dr. Corrie Rheeder, Jim Molautsi, and  Chris Williams. Kananelo Mlangeni, administrative assistant, and Juan-Ri Potgieter, senior psychologist, also contributed to the success of the intensive and engaging programme.

Discussions during the workshop focused on developing a student value proposition and creating a framework centred on student needs. Creative sessions addressed how to support a diverse and transformed student community, emphasising student-centric approaches.

With their new knowledge and insights, the SRC is ready to lead initiatives that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of the student body, contributing to a more inclusive and dynamic campus community.
This workshop marked the third in a series of strategic planning and training sessions organised by student life to ensure SRC members are well-prepared to serve as the statutory body representing students.
