Sports media team set to cover World University Games

Jabulani Timothy Ncube, a North-West University (NWU) alumnus, and current student Obriel Takunda Maposa are gearing up for an exciting journey to Chengdu, China.

They will form part of the South African media team for the 32nd edition of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games.

The event, set to take place from 28 July to 8 August 2023, will see more than 8 000 athletes from more than 150 countries competing in 18 different sporting codes.

These two passionate sports enthusiasts have been actively involved with the Sports division on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus for the past four years, honing their media skills and immersing themselves in the world of sports.

During the games, which are held every two years in different cities, the NWU media team has been entrusted with the task of capturing the exhilarating moments of this global celebration of international university sports and culture. Their coverage will include social media updates and sharing remarkable stories of the athletes representing their countries on the grand stage of the World University Games.

Obriel says he is very excited. "It's a huge honour to be part of the South African media team. The majority of us dream of representing our nations at this level, and I can't wait to tell the stories of our wonderful athletes through social media as they take on the world."

Jabulani echoes his teammate's sentiments, adding that dreams do come true.

The NWU has a strong representation in the various sporting codes at the World University Games. The team includes Deidre Jordaan (badminton coach), Albertus Aucamp (archery), Jarred Elliot (badminton), and Johan Coetzee (tennis). Christopher Swart, Valco Hendrik van Wyk, Karmen Fouche, Tamzin Thomas, Marga Cumming, Phindile Kubheka and Rogail Joseph will be part of the athletics team.
