The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recognised and celebrated the achievements of student athletes, coaches and teams during a sports awards ceremony on 13 October 2023 at the Great Hall.
The primary focus of the university sports awards ceremony was to honour outstanding athletes who excelled in their respective sporting codes throughout the year.
“This event does not only recognise exceptional athletic performance, but also acknowledges the importance of holistic development through sports. We firmly believe that beyond the scores and victories, sports play an integral role in shaping character, instilling values and fostering lifelong skills,” says Rick van Rooyen, head of sports.
In addition to individual accolades, the Sports department acknowledged the contributions of the various teams and their coaches, highlighting the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving success both on and off the field.
The body builders were the stars of the evening. Asanda Dura and Rushmore Vera were announced the Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year, respectively, and bodybuilding coach Tshepo Baloi walked away with the Coach of the Year award.
“This means a lot to me as it hasn't been an easy year, and this award proves that everything I went through was not in vain,” says Asanda.
Rushmore Vera was announced the Sportsman of the Year.
Asanda Dura was announced the Sportswoman of the Year.
