SPCS in Action: Connecting academia and industry in science

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Physical and Chemical Sciences (SPCS) will host its highly anticipated SPCS in Action event on 25 and 26 September 2024 at the Mahikeng Campus.

With the theme “Connecting academia and industry through science”, this event seeks to enhance collaboration between the scientific education and industrial sectors, providing a valuable platform for students, academics and professionals to engage with industry leaders.

The two-day event will feature presentations and exhibitions from top organisations such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Transnet, PetroSA, Mintek and Sasol. These sessions will focus on cutting-edge innovations and career opportunities in various fields, including chemistry and physics, allowing attendees to gain valuable insights and build meaningful connections with industry experts.

Prof Zimbili Zondi, head of the subject group Chemistry, emphasises the importance of these partnerships.

“This event is about more than just knowledge sharing; it’s about forging connections that will drive the future of science in South Africa,” she says. “Our students need exposure to the industry to understand the real-world applications of their studies and the opportunities that await them.”

Day one will begin with an address from Prof Thebe Medupe, the deputy dean for teaching and learning in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The day will feature presentations from organisations such as NIMSA, Inqaba, Radcon, PetroSA, Necsa and Shimadzu, highlighting their latest projects and technological advances.

Day two, hosted by Prof Zondi, will focus on key industry players such as Chemetrix, Rand Water and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority.

The event will conclude with discussions on career opportunities, with input from NWU Career Services, Thermofisher and South African Breweries.

“We are thrilled to see the caliber of companies participating. Their expertise and insights will be invaluable for our students as they navigate their career paths,” says an excited Prof Zondi.

With industry leaders sharing their expertise and fostering new relationships, the 2024 SPCS in Action event is poised to be a pivotal moment for advancing scientific knowledge and creating opportunities for professional growth.
