Soprano Thando Mabuza, an honours degree music student at the North-West University (NWU), has received a scholarship to further her studies at the Musikhochschule Lübeck in Germany, following her participation in the Vocal Masterclass and Scholarship Scheme with Martin Hundelt.
“When I received the news, I could not believe it, because during the masterclass everyone was so prepared,” said Thando. “I was excited, and I scared my family with my screams.”
She said the scholarship marks a step towards her long-term goal of becoming an opera singer. “This opportunity means a lot to me, because it brings me closer to my dream,” she said. “On a professional level, it will open opportunities and networks that can support my goals as a soprano and an academic.”
The Vocal Masterclass and Scholarship Scheme brought together seven singers for six days of training under Hundelt’s guidance. Thando was the only female singer in the group.
“The masterclass allowed me to explore my voice,” she said. “We focused on technique, especially my higher register. By the last day, we were tired, but we continued learning.”
She added that working with singers from different cities contributed to her academic development. “Spending time with other singers supported my understanding of social constructivism.”
Thando is based on the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU, where she is completing her honours degree in music, specialising in voice under the supervision of Dr Antoinette Olivier.
“My training at the School of Music has given me a technical and musical foundation,” she said. “Dr Olivier has helped me understand my voice, its potential, and the responsibility linked to vocal health and practice.”
She said her mentor is preparing her for the next phase of her studies. “She is guiding me for the expectations of studying at an international institution.”
Looking ahead, Thando said she is eager to engage with opera in Germany. “I am looking forward to speaking German in professional and academic spaces. Being closer to opera houses will allow me to experience opera as part of my daily life.”
She noted that professional opera platforms in South Africa remain limited. “Studying in Germany will allow me to observe and learn within a broader operatic environment.”
In the long term, Thando aims to balance performance and scholarship. “My goal is to build a career as a soprano while continuing my academic growth. I want to use this experience to develop my craft and gain international exposure.”
