The subject group Social Work on the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently hosted a Solemn Declaration Ceremony.
The ceremony was a momentous occasion for second-year social work students, their families, and the university community, as it marked the beginning of their journey as student social workers committed to fostering harmony and positive change within society.
The event was structured as an academic affair, with staff and students donning academic attire. The chosen theme for this occasion – drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of South African music and dance – was "Ethical rhythms: Social Work in harmony".
Event organiser Dr Luce Pretorius says the theme symbolised the integral role of social work in fostering harmony within individuals and communities. "It underscores the concept that social work is a dynamic and rhythmic profession dedicated to effecting positive change." During the ceremony, students took part in an oath-taking ceremony, signing a declaration to demonstrate their commitment to the profession. They also received their registration certificates as student social workers. Dr Pretorius says this is an important step for the students, as in adherence to the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) regulations, all social work students undergo registration with the council during their second year of studies. "The ceremony was a testament to the importance of ethical practice and the role of social work in building a harmonious society. It highlighted the dedication and commitment of the students and the university to the social work profession and the community it serves," she adds.
These second-year social work students solemnly declared their commitment to the social work profession.
