Shining bright: Humanities students celebrated for academic excellence

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.” – Pelé

This quote could not be more fitting for the occasion, as the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Humanities honoured academic excellence on 30 July during the Dean’s List Award Ceremony held at the D'vine venue on the Potchefstroom Campus.

The evening was a beautiful setting, with soft candlelight, gentle music, and a warm, celebratory atmosphere. Students and guests met in high spirits, ready to celebrate a significant accomplishment and were dressed for the occasion. The setting perfectly captured the pride and joy of the moment.

The Dean’s Merit List recognises students who have achieved an average of 75% and above in all their modules. This year, only 138 students – just 2% of the Faculty of Humanities' approximately 7 000 enrolled students – earned a place on the prestigious 2025 list for their outstanding academic performance in 2024.

The executive dean of the faculty, Prof Dumisani Moyo, welcomed students and guests virtually. He described the event as a celebration of dedication, resilience and determination. “This ceremony is a reflection of your discipline, your mastery in your chosen fields, and your ability to persevere,” he said. “You have pushed through and are setting the standard for others to emulate.”

Professors Kedibone Phago, director of the School of Government Studies and Herculene Kotzé, deputy dean for community engagement, business development and stakeholder relations, had the honour of handing over the certificates to the recipients.

In her closing remarks, Prof Kotzé commended the students for their commitment. “No one underestimates how difficult it is to achieve what you have achieved,” she said. “May this recognition inspire you to keep asking the difficult questions, listen deeply, and lead with integrity wherever your path goes next. Go forward with confidence – the world is waiting.”
