Lebogang Mosidi, vice-primaria of the Sedibeng residence on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, recently hosted a talk at the Sedibeng recreational hall in preparation of women’s month.

“A strong woman knows she has strength enough for the journey, but a woman of strength knows it is during this journey that she will become strong,” says Lebogang.

She says the aim of the Sediba Talk “Imbizo” was to raise awareness and to motivate women. “It is important to remind each other that we are in the same boat and that we should look after one another as sisters.”

As part of the theme, all the women attending the event wore headwraps.

The Imbizo gave the attendees the opportunity to address and discuss societal issues young women face in these times. “Women still go through challenges that strip away their humanity, sanity and importance in the society,” adds Lebogang.

The talk covered various topics such as mental health, academic pressure, black tax, teenage pregnancy, abuse and independence. The women discussed the causes of these issues from different perspectives, and shared solutions and advice.

NWU student Bosatla Medupe also shared a poem on women empowerment.

Lebogang says the talk was a great success. “We spoke about a lot of issues that are hard to discuss, but we tackled them head on and came up with viable solutions.”
