School of Agricultural Sciences earns national leadership award

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Agricultural Sciences has been recognised for its skills development at the South Africa Leadership Awards 2026.

The award, presented on 13 April in Johannesburg, places the school among institutions acknowledged for advancing capacity building and training across sectors.

Director of the School of Agricultural Sciences, Prof. Simon Letsoalo, said the award reflects the collective effort of staff and students in advancing agricultural education and skills development.

“This recognition affirms the work we are doing to equip graduates with relevant skills that respond to the needs of the agricultural sector and the broader economy,” he said. “It speaks to our commitment to training professionals who can contribute to sustainable food systems and rural development.”

Organisers of the awards describe the platform as a gathering of leaders, innovators and institutions whose work contributes to economic growth and societal development. The 2026 edition attracted nominations from multiple sectors, with a focus on leadership, impact and innovation.

The award highlights the role of the NWU’s School of Agricultural Sciences in developing graduates equipped to respond to challenges in agriculture, food systems and rural development. Through its teaching and research, the school contributes to strengthening skills aligned with national priorities such as sustainability and food security.

The awards programme continues to position institutions such as the NWU within national conversations on leadership and development, while creating opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
