North-West University (NWU) student Sandile Mbizeni is a debater extraordinaire.
His involvement with debate began when he assumed the role of chief adjudicator of the Debate Union on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus. During this time he had to coach debaters and public speakers, adjudicate internal tournaments, and represent the union in external competitions. "It was about creating an environment where speakers could grow and learn the art of debate," he reflects.
In 2022, Sandile coached Thato Katametsi and Jeremiah Mokoena at the Pan African Debate Tournament, where they secured second place in the English Second Language Speakers division. "Their success was the result of rigorous preparation and a commitment to improving their skills," he says.
This year, he, along with Chevaure DuPokoy, coached participants for the Jozi Rumble Tournament, and Sandile also adjudicated the finals for public speaking. Lethabo Mathatho and Makhosini Dlamini achieved second place in the Novice Debate category, while Thato Katametsi also secured second place in the Public Speaking category. Sandile says their focus was on helping the participants refine their arguments and delivery.
Later, at the Southern African Debate Championship, he coached Jeremiah Mokoena and Boiketlo Nkosi, leading to their advancement to the quarter-finals, with Boiketlo reaching the semi-finals in public speaking. "The key was in equipping them with the tools to articulate their thoughts effectively," he explains.
Sandile himself impressed at the Debate Championship and was announced the Overall Best Adjudicator in the Public Speaking division. "This award reflects the dedication and hard work put in by everyone involved," he says.
Sandile also adjudicated the North West Provincial Schools Debate Championships in 2023.
Commenting on his role as an adjudicator, he says adjudication is about fairness and providing constructive feedback to help speakers improve. The achievements of our team are thanks to a collective effort, and it is an honour to be part of this journey," he adds.
