Sandile Mbatha’s genius maintains undisputed reign against UFH

If the electrifying encounter between the North-West University’s (NWU’s) football team and their host University of Fort Hare (UFH) on 27 July 2017 is anything to go by, the NWU has made its presence felt in this year’s Varsity Football tournament.

The boys from the NWU delivered a nicely wrapped and devastating 3-0 beating to UFH, maintaining their undisputed Varsity Football winning streak against UFH, and making their presence known with their stunning maiden win in the first leg of the tournament.

This win against UFH propelled the NWU to a comfortable second position spot on the tournament log fixture, with the University of the Western Cape occupying the number one spot.

Singing from the same hymn book, Sandile Mbatha wearing jersey number 6, and Cameron Chweu, the latest addition to NWU football and eager to prove his worth in jersey number 10, quickly turned the 0-0 score for the first half of the game into a goal-scoring frenzy. With Sandile’s genius finding the back of the net twice, and Cameron delivering the devastating third goal that extended the NWU boys’ lead in the game, UFH was left egg-faced with no goals.

Cameron was also awarded the FNB Man of the Match and Samsung Best Shot awards.

Vuyo Sambo, the team manager, was pleased with the team’s performance. “The fruit of the hard work we as team – from the players on the pitch to the technical team - have put in in preparation for this tournament are showing. As a team, we understand that peak physical performance must be complimented by mental agility. That is what we saw in this match.”

This week on Thursday 3 August 2017 it will be NWU’s turn to have a game on their home turf in the second round of the tournament. The NWU will tackle Wits University in a televised game at the NWU’s Mahikeng stadium. Kick-off is set for 18:15.

FNB Player of the Match and Samsung Best Shot: Cameron Chweu (NWU).
