SABPP celebrates NWU’s academic excellence and launches Student Chapter Charter

The North-West University‘s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng, in conjunction with the South African Board for People Practices, (SABPP) hosted a Talent Management Awards ceremony on 20 April 2017 at Leopard Park.

The event was aimed at awarding outstanding performance in the Faculty of Commerce and Administration, with a specific focus on students in the Human Resource Management department. Prof Sonia Swanepoel, dean of the faculty, welcomed everyone to the event and spoke about human resource management, talent and people's practices.

Mr Xolani Mawande, chief operating officer of SABPP, addressed the audience on "The Triangle" which he believes to be a concept of life. “Life is more of a struggle at the bottom of the pyramid or triangle, but as you transcend, it becomes easier and more comfortable in terms of lifestyle and the resources available to you to succeed. The moral of the story is to always aim to be at the top.”

Mr Mawande awarded the first 50 SABPP-registered students of the NWUs campus in Mahikeng with certificates of affiliation, and subsequently started the election process of the brand new NWU SABPP Student Chapter's executive committee.

The Student Chapter Charter will primarily focus on adding value, contributing to the sustainability of organisations and to support students in accordance with the mission of the SABPP: To lead and give a credible voice to the human resource profession based on clear standards of governance, quality assurance and professionalism in human resource management and people practices in the workplace.

Mr Marius Meyer, CEO of SABPP, assisted by the NWU’s Prof Nicolene Barkhuizen and Prof Nico Schutte, also awarded the top five performers – including under- and postgraduate levels – with prize money. Staff members who have made a significant contribution to the faculty's Talent Management Programme were also recognised.

Mr Meyer and Mr Mawande wrapped up the event by welcoming and giving certificates to the newly-elected chairperson and deputy chairperson of the NWU SABPP Student Chapter Charter.
