Two researchers from the North-West University (one posthumously) were awarded a prestige ATKV-SA Academy prize for an article that appeared in the South African Journal for Natural Sciences and Technology (Suid-Afrikaanse Tydskrif vir Natuurwetenskap en Tegnologie) in 2018.
Dr Christine Taljaard-Krugell and Prof Este Vorster from the Faculty of Health Sciences received the prize money for their article on tax on sugar-sweetened cooldrinks in South Africa: perspectives from the field of nutrition (Belasting op suikerversoete koeldranke in Suid-Afrika: Perspektiewe uit die voedingsveld). Prof Este died earlier this year.
The ATKV and the South African Academy for Science and Arts (Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns) annually award a prize of R60 000 for six articles published in Afrikaans that appeared in an accredited journal in a particular year, therefore R10 000 per article.
Four of the prizes are for articles in the human sciences, and two for articles in the natural sciences. The selection process for the prizes is handled by the South African Academy for Science and Arts.
Dr Christine says it was a privilege to work and publish with Prof Este. “Receiving a prize for a contribution in Afrikaans is precious to me. Prof Este was a mentor who took people along with her and had a major influence in the international and local field of nutrition.”
