The Student Campus Council (SCC) on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng recently hosted its first ever Women’s Empowerment Conference.
The event which saw 150 guests attending, celebrated the role of women in society. They also reflected on the passing of female freedom fighters who fought relentlessly for the emancipation of women across the country, including the likes of Mama Winnie Madizikela-Mandela.
The main speaker at the event, Motsei Modise – a renowned businesswoman and NWU alumna – emphasised the need to develop spaces in all industries and sectors to empower women.
“Not only do we intend to celebrate Women’s Day, but we also want to explore ways of empowering ourselves as women and to ensure that we play an effective and major role in both the political and economic arena,” said Prof Marilyn Setlalentoa, the deputy vice-chancellor for operations on the campus in Mahikeng.
Final-year law student Boitumelo Molefe was the programme director for the evening.
