Ready, set, play! Potchefstroom Staff Sports Club heads to Bloemfontein

For the NWU Potchefstroom Staff Sports Club, sport is about far more than what happens on the field. It is about building friendships, staying active, supporting one another and creating a sense of community among colleagues.

This October, that spirit will travel to Bloemfontein as the North-West University (NWU) Staff Sports Club on the Potchefstroom Campus prepares to represent the university at the University Staff Sport and Wellness of South Africa (USSWSA) national tournament from 7 to 11 October 2026. This year’s tournament will be hosted by the University of the Free State and will bring together staff teams from 19 universities across South Africa for a week of sport, wellness and connection.

NWU will be represented in soccer, netball, volleyball and super pool, with staff members proudly wearing the university’s purple as they take on teams from across the country.

For the club, the tournament is about more than winning games. It is an opportunity for staff to step away from their usual workspaces, meet colleagues from other institutions and share in the joy and energy that comes with sport.

“When staff come together through sport, we build more than teams. We build connections, trust and a stronger sense of community that we can carry back into the workplace.” says Kabelo Maredi, deputy chairperson of the Potchefstroom Staff Sports Club.

The USSWSA tournament forms part of the club’s broader commitment to creating opportunities for staff to stay active, have fun and connect with one another. Whether it is through a competitive match, a team celebration or simply supporting a colleague from the sidelines, every moment contributes to a stronger staff community.

“As a club, we are excited to represent NWU on a national stage,” adds Kabelo. “We look forward to giving our best, supporting one another and enjoying the experience both on and off the field.”

With team spirit, plenty of purple and a whole lot of excitement, the Club is ready to take on Bloemfontein.

The bags are packed. The teams are ready. Let the games begin!
