In the spirit of giving and promoting healthy living, the Genese Running Club partnered with the Development and Fundraising department to host an eventful sports day in support of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Meal-A-Day programme.
Held on Saturday, 25 July, the event encouraged students and stuff to turn physical activity into a meaningful action by donating non-perishable food items to help their fellow students in need. The event started with a 5 km fun run from the Big Lapa, across the eye-catching landscapes of the Vanderbijlpark Campus and back to the banks of the Vaal River.
To recognise their enthusiasm, the top 50 finishers of the run received PLATO vouchers, while top five men and women were rewarded with goodie bags. The winners of each category also walked away with medals, adding to a day that centred on competition and compassion.
The excitement of the day continued with inter-res football and netball matches between the Genese Running Club and the Student Academic Chapter (SAC). Genese claimed victory in both contests, winning the football match 7 – 3 and the netball fixture 11 – 2. Junior Nketsi earned the football player of the tournament after scoring two goals and providing an assist while Anelita Tiso was recognised as the best netball player for her leadership and determination on the court.
“We strive to be the change we want to see in our community, and that is exactly why we decided to host this event,” said Lepata Molotja, founder of the Genese Running Club as he reflected on the days’ success.
“I am incredibly proud that the event was a success and that we were able to officially launch the Genese Dropbox. It is an initiative by the club where students can donate items during the clubs’ weekly runs. We are grateful to have made a meaningful impact through the donations we collected while also brining people together through running, football and netball,” he added.
According to Molotja, partnering with the Development and Fundraising department was for a good cause. “Together we share the same vision of supporting students, creating positive change, and ensuring that no student goes to bed hungry.”
