Professor honoured for mental health advocacy

Prof Leepile Sehularo, director of the Lifestyle Diseases research focus area at the North-West University (NWU), has been recognised for his efforts in calling for more mental health research and better support systems.

He received the Positive Mental Health Advocate Award at The Big Up Awards on 23 August.

The Big Up Awards celebrate individuals and organisations making a difference across South Africa. The Positive Mental Health Advocate Award is presented to individuals who promote awareness, education and advocacy around mental health. It recognises those who use their professional and personal platforms to encourage dialogue, reduce stigma and support initiatives that improve mental well-being in communities.

The ceremony was held at the Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Zamdela Sport Centre in Sasolburg, in partnership with the Bakwena Royal House and Abbaqua Royal House.

Prof Sehularo, a professor of psychiatry and mental health nursing, has built his career on combining teaching, research and mentorship. He holds a PhD, MNSc, BNSc and diplomas in health science education, health services management and labour law.

His mentoring reaches beyond South Africa’s borders, and he has supervised 10 PhD and 19 master’s graduates from various countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Botswana and Pakistan.

Reflecting on the award, he said: “This recognition is not about me alone but about the communities, colleagues and students who have walked this journey with me. Mental health is a shared responsibility, and collaboration is the key to progress.

“I see this award as encouragement to continue advocating for greater awareness, research and support systems for mental health, particularly in communities where stigma still silences too many voices,” he added.

Prof Sehularo’s recognition highlights the NWU’s contribution to advancing mental health care and shaping future leaders in the field.
