The North-West University (NWU) Faculty of Health Sciences commends Prof Andries Monyeki, who has been asked to represent the National Department of Health at an upcoming multi-country World Health Organization (WHO) workshop. This nomination both reflects his expertise and recognises his research contributions to public health policy.
Prof Monyeki has expressed his gratitude, saying that he is "greatly honoured and humbled by this nomination".
The workshop, scheduled for 17 August 2023, will focus on promoting health and the co-benefits of walking and cycling in the African region. Its objectives are to foster a culture of physical activity and promote walking and cycling as essential components of a healthier lifestyle. These activities are not only beneficial for individual well-being, but also have the potential to contribute to broader societal health and development goals.
Prof Monyeki's role will involve sharing his insights into and expertise on the promotion of health through walking and cycling. The aim is to share best practices and knowledge relating to physical activity, especially with regard to non-motorised modes of transport (NMT). The WHO Health and Economic Assessment Tool (HEAT) will feature prominently, with a strong focus on its potential to drive policy decisions for better health outcomes in the African region.
When asked about his aspirations, Prof Monyeki shared his commitment to conducting groundbreaking public health research. He desires to make valuable contributions to policymaking processes and the overall advancement of his university. His vision aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goal of ensuring good health and well-being for all. It is also an extension of the NWU's goal of making significant contributions to health and well-being in Africa.
