Prof Chaundry M Khalique, from the International Institute for Symmetry Analysis and Mathematical Modelling on the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU),  has recently been inducted as one of three 2016 fellows of the prestigious Royal Society of South Africa.

The Royal Society of South Africa, founded in 1908, is an independent, interdisciplinary organisation that aims at furthering all branches of science in South Africa. Fellows and members of the society are persons who occupy senior positions in universities, research agencies and various industries in general. The Society recognises research excellence through the organisation of scientific conferences, expeditions, workshops and seminars, fosters science education, publishes an accredited international journal and promotes public awareness of all aspects of science and technology.

Like its counterpart in Britain, the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of South Africa fosters both pure and applied science by promoting the exchange and development of scientific ideas and knowledge, especially in the inter-disciplinary context; by recognising excellence in research and scholarship; by promoting international contacts and cooperation; by promoting independent expert advice on important matters which require scientific analysis; by initiating debate on matters of public importance which affect science or arise from its application; and lastly, by encouraging the study of the history of science in South Africa.

“I am very pleased to have been selected to join this prestigious society.  As an academic, this is a huge milestone for our campus and allows us to continue producing quality work which will resonate with our teaching and learning in fields such as Mathematics in all our institutions of higher learning,” said Prof Khalique.
