The staff soccer and netball teams of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Potchefstroom Campus demonstrated their athletic prowess and team spirit during a friendly tournament held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) this past weekend. The event also featured teams from the University of Pretoria (UP) and Metropolitan Life, offering a thrilling mix of competition and camaraderie.
Soccer team results
The soccer team had a commendable performance across their three matches. Their first encounter against Metropolitan Life saw the NWU triumph with a convincing 3-1 victory, showcasing the team's offensive strength and strategic play.
The second match proved to be a more challenging contest as the NWU faced the host team, UJ. Despite a determined effort and solid defence, the NWU fell short, losing 1-0 to a late goal from UJ. The team’s resilience was on full display as they quickly regrouped for their final match against UP.
In their last match, the NWU and UP ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. The match highlighted the balanced strengths of both teams, making for an exciting end to the soccer fixtures.
Netball team performance
The netball team also had an impressive showing. They opened their campaign with a dominant performance against UJ, securing a decisive 14-5 victory.
In their second game against UP, the NWU team faced a tougher challenge. Despite their best efforts and strong defensive play, they were edged out by UP, finishing with a close 12-9 defeat. NWU netball coach Potso Mogapi praised his team’s effort, emphasising the growth and unity displayed throughout the tournament.
The tournament was not just about competition but also about fostering relationships and building harmony among staff members from different universities. The NWU's participation highlighted the institution's commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among its staff, whom returned home with a sense of accomplishment and the determination to excel in future inter-university sports events.
As the excitement from this tournament settles, the NWU looks forward to hosting the 4th inter-campus staff wellness tournament on 30 August 2024, aiming to continue fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie across campuses
