North-West University (NWU) nursing student and the winner of the WorldSkills South Africa Occupational Standards National competition, Tshiamo Mokgoetsi, is preparing in all earnest for the international WorldSkills competition that will take place in France in October 2022.
With the assistance of the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), Tshiamo was coached and mentored by two national experts in August.
This was followed by a session facilitated by HWSETA representatives and national experts in Cape Town, which provided more insight on what the WorldSkills international competition will entail, as well as team-building and problem-solving activities.
She also participated in a friendly competition on health and social care in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates from 5 to 9 September 2022. The competition schedule included hospital, residential home base and day care.
On the home front nursing lecturers Boitumelo Molato, Tabea Motsilanyane and Grace Baakeleng are making sure that Tshiamo gets the necessary clinical support.
Tshiamo says she has been learning a lot throughout all these preparation sessions, but her biggest learning experience was the competition in Abu Dhabi.
“The friendly competition came at just the right time. Now I know what I need to do and on what I should focus to be ready for the actual international competition.
“Juggling my studies and preparing for the competition has been tough, but I have no doubt in my abilities. I am going there to make the NWU and South Africa proud,” says Tshiamo.
