Matric learners at Tshidi Barolong Secondary School received guidance on academic and career pathways when alumni from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus visited them on 21 February 2026.
The Mahikeng Young Alumni Chapter aimed to prepare learners for their final exams and post-matric life. The session focused on education, resilience, relationships with teachers and transitioning to university and the workplace. More than 200 Grade 12 learners attended the event. The alumni office also donated pencil cases to the grade 12 learners as part of the outreach.
Shaun Tamane, NWU alumnus and chairperson of the chapter, shared his experience growing up in a township and navigating a merged school environment with crime and peer pressure. “A school is much like life. All that may disrupt you will always be within your reach. It is your life choices that determine your future,” he said.
Shaun also outlined his academic and professional journey. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree in political science and international relations, an honours degree in political studies, roles in human rights and electoral democracy. He is currently doing a postgraduate internship at the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus.
Shaun concluded the session with a practical exercise on collective effort, stating: “At the end of the year, your success will not be measured individually but through your collective effort. Assist one another in difficult subjects to ensure the class of 2026 succeeds.”
Thembinkosi Couter, chapter bursar, reflected on his journey from a rural village school to a Bachelor of Nursing degree at the NWU and to ongoing PhD studies. He urged learners to exceed minimum academic requirements and to use time with teachers effectively. “Respecting and listening to the teachings of teachers can positively contribute to your academic growth.”
The visit highlighted the role of NWU alumni in providing mentorship, guidance and a tangible connection between secondary school learners and higher education.
